Parker has been in foster care for the last few months while recovering from surgery but is now back in the kennels and looking for a home.
Hi, I'm Parker, don't I have the most wonderful ears?! I can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but I do start to feel more comfortable with some love and reassurance. I am very friendly towards other dogs of all sizes and I do have a very playful side as I only recently turned 3 years old. I am an all round lovely boy who will make a great pet.
This has been sent in by Parkers foster carer...
"Parker is a big lad, black with 4 white feet and the very tip of his tail is also white. He has lovely soft fur, beautiful eyes and spectacular Pharaoh hound ears. He is very placid, although he likes to run around for short periods with his squeaky monkey (which can go with him to his new home to comfort him during the change), usually after his first trip down the garden and when he comes back from a walk.
He is quite a nervous dog at the moment but when he gets to know you likes lots of fuss and cuddles. Probably because of his large ears, he is very sensitive to noise so probably would be best not in a home with boisterous, noisy children. He is now acclimatised to most household noises but does not like the vacuum cleaner and unexpected noises, like dropping something in the kitchen, still cause him to retreat to his safe corner. Outside he walks nicely on the lead and is becoming used to normal traffic but is still unsure about parked vans and people talking loudly. Noisy builders cause him some distress and he wants to turn back or to get past as soon as he can. This is being worked on with regular walks where he can get used to meeting people and seeing a variety of vehicles and activity. Plenty of reassurance soon settles him down if he gets upset.
He is not cat friendly. He is also interested in squirrels so probably not suitable for a home with guinea pigs, rabbits, etc. He is OK with other dogs. If they yap or bark at him he will respond but not generally in an aggressive manner, just letting them know he can bark louder than they can! He is foster with another dog (galga) and gets on fine with her so living with another dog or dogs should be no problem.
He is house trained. He goes out last thing before bedtime until he has done what he needs to then he will go for around 9 hours, although at that he is usually desperate to go down the garden for a wee as soon as he gets up. During the day he tends to go down the garden at the same times - dinnertime, teatime and mid-evening. He doesn’t make it obvious when he wants to go, just getting up and standing at the door or sometimes coming to stand by you so it is necessary to get used to the signs.
He is currently fed twice a day, normally around 12:30 and 18:30 but he eats everything out before him (including tablets!) as soon as it appears so timing is not critical. He eats kibble with a small amount of cooked or tinned dog meat mixed in with it."
